Date Day Series #1: Forest Skating

Inspired by the warmth of Valentines Day vibes that surround us during the month of February, Dave and I got a little adventurous.

We try and plan a date day at least once a month. It’s been a mainstay in our 5 year relationship; but after a while, you kind of run out of things to do. It’s not that we don’t just enjoy each other’s company (I would say he’s probably the only one I can spend hours with doing nothing… something I find hard even on my own).

The way I see it is that life has so much to offer in terms of experiences. That’s what makes life exciting. Today doesn’t have to be like the day before. So what better way to enjoy life together than to try something new and different, right?

This philosophy inspired me to kick off a new blog feature: Date Date Series.

I’ll be documenting to cool new things we do and, hopefully, inspire you to do the same! You don’t even have to do it with a boyfriend or husband. Try these things with a family member or a best friend… or if you’re super adventurous, with a stranger!

I can’t wait to hear what you guys think! But without further ado, here’s my first of the Date Day Series:

Discover a new awe-inspiring place together…

ARROWHEAD PROVINCIAL PARK :
SKATING TRAIL

There’s so much beauty in the world but we all get so wrapped up in our own little bubble and routine that we forget to go out and explore this beauty. Dave surprised me with the idea of taking a road trip up north to Arrowhead Provincial Park to “skate in a forest”. At first, I was super skeptical… I mean, have you seen Canadian winters?! It’s cold.

Admittedly, I agreed because I thought it would make for some incredible photos… and I’m a sucker for good content. I wasn’t excited about the drive though. Road trips typically put me to sleep.

I was extremely pleasantly surprised though. The drive was probably the best part. We talked, laughed, discussed dreams, and was amazing bonding time. Something about being stuck in a car with someone forces you to have a discussion. We even put our phones away (or at least, I tried for the most part haha)

We also got lost a couple times and it was also snowing like crazy up north (there wasn’t a snowflake in sight in the city). It was definitely an adventure even getting to Arrowhead. Date Day became Extreme Adventure Day.

As we were driving into the park, I already knew it was going to be an amazing time. I’m a city girl, so being immersed in a forest is like being on another world. Typically my (albeit a bit ignorant) line is “WE’RE IN THE WILDERNESS!”

There’s no cost to the skating trail, so you only have to pay for your parking, which is $17.

We laced up our skates by the camp fire, put our boots in cubbies (yes, there are cubbies there), and hit the trail.

It was absolutely beautiful. 1.5 km of trees and ice. Even if you’re not a good skater, you can attack the trail. It’s easy, flat, and super family oriented as well. So there’s no crazies wizzing by you.

Some really beautiful sights were snow caps shedding off trees. It created this beautiful shimmer all around you… definitely a place for a romantic date.

There’s also tubing, snow-shoeing, and cross country skiing at Arrowhead. So your day is sure to be fun filled. Make sure to bring some snacks (sweets were my choice, of course); but there are a couple food stations around as well.

I gave big ups to Dave for coming up with the idea. It ended up topping my personal list of our favourite dates. It was the perfect combination of activity, bonding, and laughter… and yes, cheesy, hand-holding skating was involved!

Would you try this skating trail for a date day?
