Spicing Up The Black & White Ensemble

EARRINGS (Inspired Collection, $10). NECKLACE (Urban Planet, $8). SHIRT (Material Girl, $30). SHORTS (Urban Outfitters, $20). CLUTCH (Kate Spade, $40). HEELS (Aldo, $30).

The whole I wear all black all day, all night thing can be, not only pretentious, but also really boring. I’m all for the sleek all black outfits (I lived most of my life so far doing so); but something about it feels monotonous and drab when you’re doing it on the daily. I’ve slowly begun to add more colours into my wardrobe and now I’m addicted to pops of pigment. But all black and white can still look effortlessly chic.

To curb the drabiness, add textures and different materials which makes an all black and white outfit more interesting and inspiring. These tweed shorts (which I happened to score at an Urban Outfitters extra 50% off sale. Yes!) and leather accents helped me do exactly that. The perforated accent on the heels were just the perfect subtle compliment to this philosophy.

I love spicing up an all black and white outfit with some sparkly accessories – something to bring the simplistic outfit to life (Hello, my name is Mel and I’m a sparkly bauble addict). Give me a collar to add in the mix and you’ve got me feeling like Olivia Palermo (emphasis on feeling). Statement pieces can be distracting and costume jewelry sometimes borders the line of tacky and just too much – but if done right, you look polished and on trend.

You can pick up some seriously good deals on statement pieces nowadays. I’m a huge believer in today’s statement pieces. The sparkliness is just unavoidably addicting. I’ll make sure to do some coverage on my embarrassingly large collection (about 100 pieces) funny monkey Which is why, I admit, most of my outfit posts include at least one statement piece of jewelry. Shhhhhh.

There’s this one Aldo (most Torontonians already know this secret) in Toronto, at Yonge and Dundas, where, if you sneak towards the back are clearance items with an extra 30-50% off the already reduced price. I snatched these genuine leather perforated heels there for a whopping $30.00. The bargain struggle is a real thing for me. Aldo solves the issue of wanting those trendy heels that you don’t want to spend a fortune on nor want the plastic version of. These were surprisingly super comfs – not boots-were-made-for-walking comfs, but comfs enough.

Et voilà! My slightly spiced up all black and white ensemble – on trend, still simple, with just a touch of sexy (show dem legs ladies, you’ve got em!). Hope it inspires you to move away from the 24-7 drabby-black. If all else fails, well… black will always be there.

Do you swear by the all black looks on the daily? Or have you switched over to colours and spiced up black and white ensembles too? Let me know in the comments below friends!
