The Story Behind This Father’s Day Espresso Machine

Memories. We all have them, right? Some are good, some are bad, some seem unnecessary to even recall. Maybe it’s something about Dave and I moving out, or perhaps me approaching my tertiary-life crisis (is that a thing haha), but I’m feeling super nostalgic.

So this Father’s Day, I ended up picking up a bunch of gifts for my dad. He, alongside my mom, were incredibly huge helps in helping us find our dream home. My dad has always been a proponent of the “even though I could pay for you, it means more if you learn how to pay for it yourself” philosophy. And although I resented him for it for a long time, I think he’s a huge reason why I’ve pushed myself throughout all these years. In sum, he’s responsible for my entire work ethic, my goals in life, and the career I’m so thankful to have.

Even in my angsty years, I remember these family memories where I would purposely try and keep the family around together after dinner, instead us all parting our own ways. I didn’t really know why, but I just wanted to spend more time talking to each other. Maybe it was to show my parents “how hard I was working” and “how much I was doing”, but I truly think the core of it was just wanting to spend more time with them.

I just wanted to spend more time with them…

A big excuse I used was coffee. “Let’s have coffee” or “let’s go for coffee” was always my go-to method. My parents have always been coffee enthusiasts so I grew up drinking coffee from probably an inappropriately young age haha That being said, I always knew the answer when I asked would always be “sure”.

So this year, as I pondered what gift(s) to pick up for my dad, this memory kept poking its head in. I figured it was a sign for the perfect gift.

Finding The Perfect Gift (and Deal) On Best Buy

My dad is a bit of a tech geek, so naturally I hopped onto BestBuy.ca to start my browsing. I looked through cameras, a new phone, a new TV, but somehow I couldn’t get the idea of “coffee” out of my mind. I didn’t realize but Best Buy and Best Buy online has SO much selection when it comes to home appliances. They even have furniture! It couldn’t have come at a better time as I’m also looking for stuff for my new home.

I went down the online shopping bunny hole and found myself at the Coffee Machine section. I didn’t even realize there were so many options when it came to coffee at home! I definitely learned a thing or two.

I ended up stumbling on an awesome Breville Duo Temp Pro Espresso Machine that was also coincidentally on sale! I knew my father wouldn’t only just love it, he would love the fact that I got it on a steal! Originally $450, but on sale for $350. It was serendipitous.

This one came with all the professional fixings, matched my parent’s kitchen aesthetic, and had a very symbolic “2 shot” pouring system. I also loved reading all the reviews on Best Buy for the product. They were honest and really positive about this product. It had a 4.7/5 rating based on 19 reviews.

I picked it up without a second thought.

The Reaction

I think the story made the gift even more special to my dad. I explained to him that this gift was to inspire us to continue our coffee traditions, even when I left his home. I told him that I couldn’t imagine life without his support and mentorship and that this machine was an excuse to spend more time together. He loved it.

I made 2 espressos and as I was going through the motions, he just had to get involved. I taught him in one try. The machine was surprisingly super easy to use.

All in all, I think this gift was a successful one. It almost brought a tear to my father’s eye, which is a feat in and of itself. I realized throughout this entire process, that it’s really not the gift in and of itself that’s important on celebrations like Father’s Day. It’s the story and the memories that they represent and celebrate. Here’s to all of you this Father’s Day – I hope you’re all celebrating and cherishing every laugh and moment with your families emoji
