The Trend You’ll Use To Death

Trends come and go and I love how they speak to the times. Whenever I’m in a Chapters or Indigo, I always find the “fashion trends through the years” type of book to flip through. It’s just so cool how fashion trends really represent the era by which they live within.

This past year has been all about the revival of the 90s (in my opinion at least), and I couldn’t love it more. Being born in the 90s (albeit barely making it), I remember all of these trends and hold some pretty fond memories to that time in my life (chokers, tank tops, etc). There’s one particular trend I’m obsessed with this season though – hint: it reminds me of my overall-wearing school days.

The layered t-shirt.

This is the look that all the girls wore in school because we weren’t allowed spaghetti straps/tank tops (4 finger rule), but still wanted to be cool. Although I’m less concerned about feeling cool nowadays – and I definitely allow myself to wear spaghetti straps – I’m embracing this trend with huge open arms. There’s something so effortless and innocent about the layered t-shirt.

It also allows you to do without the accessories and really embrace the minimalism of the whole look – just me, myself, and my white T errwhere I go. This look represents just that – effortlessness, living with ease, and the comfort that only comes from your favourite white T.

TOPS

This favourite white T of mine is from Old Navy (and was super cheap so I don’t have to worry about spilling sauce all over it, which I definitely will) and the layered cropped tank with key ring hole details is a trendy snag from Forever 21. For your white T, you want to find something that’s not too baggy, but not skin tight either. When you’re layering something on top of your white T, you want to make sure it’s got contrast (so black is a natural choice) and that it’s not tight (or else you’ll just look like you’re wearing a corset over your T).

SHORTS

The shorts are literally a wardrobe veteran for me. They’ve been in my closet for years and have made appearances in some of my favourite looks. They’re a pair of faux lather parachute shorts I picked up during one of Zara’s infamous bi-annual sales (so yes, I scored it for $19). Although they do leave your bum quite sweaty in the heat, they make me feel cool AF – so it’s alright with me emoji

CHOKER

I don’t even know if I can say too much about this choker other than the fact I’m surprised it worked out. I really just wanted to get the look, but didn’t want to spend $30 on it. So what did I do? I went to Michaels, picked up some string and wrapped it around me neck (and not in the morbid Game of Thrones sort of way).

MODERN LOAFERS

The loafers are the star of this outfit. It brought everything together in a perfect way. The loafer style made me feel like a school girl again, but the modern contrast fit with the reinvented 90s vibe I was going for (as a 24 year old). They’re also incredibly comfortable and you know why – they’re from Geox. They’ve actually become more comfortable than some of my favourite sneakers and look so chic with everything. I loved the dramatic sole and pointy tips. Although it doesn’t do wonders for my natural clown feet (size 10), I’m putting my insecurities away to rock the suckers sunglass emoji

So there you have it – a trend that will have you spinning it on repeat all season long. It doesn’t just make you feel cool and effortless, it also is the perfect way to make a non-work appropriate top, work appropriate (now you can ditch those camisoles you’ve hated for so long). You’re probably thinking, nah I won’t wear this too much; but trust me, once you’ve tried it once, you’re doing it all the time (that’s how I’ve become with chokers too, but more on that later wink emoji).
