You know how you buy more and more shoes (because how could you not?) but there are always those 2-5 pairs that get worn till their soles are basically peeling off? And you wonder – why don’t I share my love equally between all my pairs?
The answer is comfort. Comfy shoes get so much more wear and as much as we continue to deny it, they’re never our heels. They’re our go-to slip ons, sandals, flip flops, and sneakers. I’d love to pretend I was Carrie Bradshaw and wear my “strappy sandals” everywhere I go, prancing down sidewalks like “heeeeeeey“, but when I’m running errands or running from meeting to meeting – those heels are in my tote and it’s my slip ons that are bringing me there on time.
TBH, I’ve kind of got a #YouCantSitWithUs vibe with my crew of comfy shoes. I have my Sam Edelman ballet flats, my Nikes, my Keds, and I can’t really be bothered with adding anyone else into my comfy shoes clan. If anything, I continue to buy heels I only ever wear once
When I recently learned about Sanuk shoes, I was skeptical about how comfy they would really be. I have flat feet, so flip flops and sandals can sometimes be an issue for me – but they really made their case. The Sanuks I sampled are one of the most comfortable soles I’ve ever felt – think, walking on cushiony clouds. They put up a serious competition with my Nike Fly Knits for the title of #1 comfy shoes in my closet (which is saying a lot, trust me).
Sanuk actually comes from thai word “fun” and after reading a bit more about the brand, I was really taken by their culture. It surrounds community, laughter, the vibe of “letting your hair down”, and most of all, their philosophy of never being uncomfortable.
For those of you that read my blog or know me well, you know that I’m all about inspiring people to never apologize for who they are and being comfortable in your own skin. So this was the kicker that really got me to give the plushy Sanuk soles a try.
I was not disappointed.
My favourite is definitely the Yoga Mat Sandals. For $50, you’re literally walking on memory foam, hugging, non-pulling, sandals all day. The double knit upper part totally beats the pinching thong-sandals; and yes – the sole is actually made with a yoga mat. How cool right? It totally breathes the philosophy of comfort, understated beauty, and fun.
The Kats Meow pair are awesome sidewalk walkers and put up a pretty big fight with my ever so loyal Keds. I loved that it was a soft canvas, so the material didn’t chafe at all, and that it had arch support (again, easy on my infuriating flat feet). The pointed toe aspect was just a bonus – I have really thin (but long) feet, so wide toed shoes either look clown-ish on me or just slip off.
It’s not often that I truly feel inspired by brands, but when I do, I make sure to give credit where credit’s due. I’m a huge fan of brand culture and brand messages. My cheese-factor is about a 10 because I love wearing things for what they mean and stand for. Sanuk is also a Canadian brand and we all know I’m a sucker for local. You can actually learn more about all the fun they stand for here.
If you get a chance, definitely try them out. There’s no place like being in your comfy shoes. If you’re anything like me, learn from my experience, and open up your roster – your feet will thank you. We spend enough of the day hoo-ing and ha-ing, running around, putting our poker face on, the last thing we need is do it in non-comfy shoes. I know you feel me
What are your go-to favourite, probably worn out, comfy shoes?
