Room Makeover : How To Create A “Blog Office”

Your home is a very big reflection of yourself and your life. When your home is a mess, there’s a good chance so is your life. Like most teenagers, I lived in a messy room. I upheld that it was an organized chaos. It was not. It was just chaos; and like most teenagers, so was my life.

I’ve grown up just a little bit now. And although I will admit my place gets messy from time to time, I’ve found a new joy in decorating my place… which also means keeping it spick and spam relatively clean.

BEFORE MAKEOVER

CLUTTER, DISARRAY, LACK OF PURPOSE

One room in my house is super clean compared to everything else – little clutter, no clothes on the floor, lots of open space. The only reason for that though? It’s was an unused room. It literally sat there, gathering dust for the most part, for years with no purpose. Odds and ends were thrown in that didn’t have a home (mostly because they didn’t belong anywhere else), but the light that streamed into the room made it the perfect space to spruce up. So when the opportunity came to revamp it, I had the perfect idea.

THE PROCESS

GETTING INSPIRED IS #1

I’ve seen a lot of “office” interiors all over Pinterest, but none that really spoke to the type of work I do at home. Sure, most of my work is done via a laptop/computer. I don’t need that much; but there’s something about a space that makes you inspired to do great work. And that’s what I was gung-ho on creating: a Blogger’s Office (or an Inspiration Den, I couldn’t choose just one name haha)

I had seem Artemano pop up a few times before, mostly when I was driving to Vaughn Mills (they have a showroom in near there); but I had never spent the time to discover it. When I did, I was touched. I know, I know, I get touched easily – but the story and passion behind their brand is truly inspiring.

Their philosophy is that your home is an escape and that daily life is a beautiful journey. And it’s true. We always look at our daily lives as something ritually mundane, but in reality, your life is completely wasted when you look at it just “trying to get through another day”.

They also believe that nature’s creation (mostly, wood) is where we feel most at home. They say wood is like fingerprints and that each grain is unique and imperfect – which makes it beautiful. I couldn’t agree more.

The team travels all around the world (mostly South East Asia) to ensure they’re sourcing their materials ethically and with quality in mind. They also share the story of the wood behind each piece. And when I say that, I mean every associate in their showroom knows these stories. They’re genuinely passionate about how a piece came from an abandoned shipwreck or from a grandiose Suar tree. The collective passion is truly awe-inspiring.

Because of all of this, it felt natural to creative my blogging and inspiration haven with them. And so we did. We spent 3 hours in their showroom, carefully selecting the pieces that would become a part of this dream come true. Like I said, their team was incredible and I walked out of there, not only with beautiful furniture, but a new way of thinking and looking at my furniture.

STEP 1 : Find Your Statements

Ifell in love with the free-form tables and the way that Artemano left the wood in its imperfect and unique shapes. I picked up the Suar Free Form bar table (which btw, is on sale right now for more than 50% off) and another Suar Free Form desk-table (which could also be used as a small dining table). I would use the latter as my new blogging desk, reminding me that what I put into the world is as unique as the wood beneath my fingertips and the prior as place to showcase the things and people I loved. Also, I figured they would translate perfectly into my downtown home when I move there.

STEP 2 : Decorate With Meaning

And of course, the look would not be complete without inspiring decor. I threw in the shallow slate bowl set, the metal vase with spout, a buddha for zen, the silver tea candle holder set, and a beautiful wooden box mirror. I also fell in love with the lantern style hanging lamp because of the way it transformed light. I typically work on my blog during day hours but the lamp casts just a beautiful vision of light when it’s on. It’s almost mystical and dream-inspiring.

STEP 3 : Understand The Space's Function

I finished off the room with a full length mirror and my clothes rack (so I could style my looks in my inspiration haven). The Eiffel Chair is one you’ve seen in my bedroom office; but it looks so much more purposeful here.

STEP 4 : Embrace Purposeful Empty Space

I wanted to leave the rest of the room really empty. The reality is that you need a lot of open space to capture images, create flatlays, and to clear your mind when blogging. I loved how naked the room felt… but unlike its meaningless emptiness before, it had a lot more purpose now. And I could feel it every time I walked by.
