Channeling 90s Vibes & Memories In Monochrome

Being born in the 90s means a whole lot of things. It means you remember the Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys in their glory days, you have an immense love (or hate) for the spaghetti strap trend, and you actually remember when you stopped watching TV after school (and started going on computers, re: MSN messenger).

It’s crazy how, only a decade ago, style and life was so different. The world has revolutionized so much with the world of Facebook, Youtube, and blogs… and has become a lot sexier in its technology.

I personally look back at the 90s with such love. It was definitely a less complicated life. It was childhood for me.

I look back at my memories of the oh-so-loved snap away pants, John Deer trucker hats, and pig tail styles with so much fondness. Now some of those trends are resurfacing and reimagined as “modern minimalism”. Naturally, I couldn’t help but be inspired to put together a look as an ode to that era.

The crop top is nod to how much I idolized Sporty Spice, in the Spice Girls glory days. I think I watched their tour video (on VHS, of course) so many times I could literally recite the entire movie off. I remember her with these killer abs and sporty chicness that was so cool, everyone wanted to “be her” at recess play time.

I threw an oversized boyfriend shirt overtop – literally a boyfriend shirt, it’s Dave’s – to reminisce that oversized boy-band uniform that consisted of baggy everything. I never understood why that was a thing… but who knows, maybe we’ll look back at our “layering” trends the same way 10 years from now.

The pleather snap away skirt with this chunky (somewhat tacky emoji) buckle had 90s written all over it when I spotted it at a thrift store for $7. I purchased as a joke at first, but after I tried it on, really loved how it fit. I have no idea what brand makes it, but it seems to hold quite the story behind it… probably from the 90s emoji

The footwear is the staple to this outfit though. My parents would always remind me to wear socks with my sneakers and I always hated how it looked. Now… I love it. The chunkier the sock, the better haha

These wicked sneaks are from Geox’s new collaboration with Patrick Cox and are just as comfortable as they are cool. When I went in to pull my March pick, as a Geox ambassador, these grabbed my attention within the first 10 seconds of being in the store.

The designer has quite the shoe-cult following and I totally understand why. The subtle details and textures of this pair are amazing. If you look closely, the capped toe and heel tip is embellished with stud textures. It’s called the Jaysen, and of course, is like walking on air (like every pair of Geox shoes you buy).

The pair is actually 80s inspired, but to me, it still screams 90s. The style also comes in white but I fell in love with the stark monochrome contrast of the black. It’s also super light and ultra padded, and is slowly climbing the ranks as my favourite pair of sneaks.  Comfort gets me every time thumbs up emoji

The monochrome vibe is a little bit of today’s time embedded with my ode. The 90s were all about weirdly obnoxious colours (as I remember, at least), but I wanted to keep this look cool, sporty, and true to my personal aesthetic (minimal and neutral).

I had so much fun with this outfit. It almost felt like I was playing dress up again as a kid (as Sporty Spice, of course). Who knows, maybe I’ll be the next modern-age Sporty Spice. I did hear they were going on tour again, after all emoji
