There’s truly nothing like a good biscuit to compliment any meal (or y’know to snack on). For the longest time, I had been creating biscuits with ready-made box kits from the grocery store. And although those were great in a jiffy, I recently learned how to make them at home from scratch
And it’s official. Nothing beats homemade biscuits from fresh ingredients. These Buttermilk Cheddar Chive Biscuits were so much quicker and easier than I thought it would be!
I’m definitely the baker in our household (Dave likes to cook the gourmet dishes, although I argue that I make a pretty great sous-chef). So when I say that these are super easy to make, I mean it. It’ll take about 15 minutes for you to prepare (even as a beginner baker) and 15 minutes to bake in the oven. The bigger struggle will be limiting yourself to eating just one.
I can’t take credit for this new-found, glorious biscuit fame though. I got this delicious Buttermilk Cheddar Chive Biscuits recipe from Ontario Dairy’s Savour Ontario At Home collection, where over 30 professional local chefs came together to develop recipes to inspire all of us to get cooking at home. This time is undoubtedly a hard one on so many of us and spending time in the kitchen trying new recipes has honestly been one of our favourite activities to get moving, feel accomplished, and actually enjoy.
This Buttermilk Cheddar Chive Biscuits recipe is from Suzanne Barr, of True True Diner, an amazing spot to eat here in the heart of Downtown Toronto. I’ve had the amazing opportunity to dine at True True Diner last year and it was delicious. Trying Suzanne’s recipe at home felt like bringing the diner and all of the amazing culinary goodness of our province into my own home. On a personal note, Suzanne is also one of the chefs in Toronto that is rooted in our community and causes. You can read more about her amazing roles in the past and her passion for our beautiful city here.
This and so many other incredible recipes can be found at Ontario Dairy’s Savour Ontario website. I’ve already bookmarked quite a few others to try next!
Here are the ingredients that the recipe calls for, the instructions, and a few of my notes about it:
- I love that so many of the items that the Buttermilk Cheddar Chive Biscuits recipe calls for are ones that you likely already have it your pantry
- Dave and I make an effort, now more than ever, to try and support local. When you’re grocery shopping, I suggest looking at the label, the brand, and where it comes from. We always try to support our Ontario Dairy Farmers.
- You can use any time of cheddar cheese, but investing in a good Ontario cheddar, like this one from Black River Cheese (out of Prince Edward County) will make a world of a difference in your biscuits
- Chives are really inexpensive, but you can also grow them in your garden (we picked ours from our garden)
- If you don’t have a stand mixer, don’t worry! You can definitely create the Buttermilk Cheddar Chive Biscuits by hand or with a hand mixer as well. It’ll just a take a bit longer.
- When I put my chilled butter into my stand mixer and turned it on, a cloud of flour definitely poofed all over our kitchen haha I recommend either melting the butter a bit so that it’s easier to mix in or gradually blend it in by hand before turning up your stand mixer
- You can cut your dough into any shape but we found it easy to use a round cookie cutter to create perfectly shaped round biscuits
- Although the biscuits don’t widen during baking too much, they do rise a bit. I’d space them out 2 inches apart on your baking sheet
- I like my biscuits to be a bit softer (kind of like bread), so I left my biscuits in the oven for about 13 minutes. 15 minutes will give you that crunchy outer shell though!
Recipe Review
With testing any recipe, I’ve learned that there’s bound to be a few bad batches. But when I say that this Buttermilk Cheddar Chive Biscuits recipe is good for any level of baker, I mean it. The first batch of biscuits out of the oven turned out fluffy and delicious (and the scent is one that will make you want to cozy up with a movie and a platter of these… willingly, instructed to stay at home or not). It also makes for a great activity with your SO or the whole family.
I love that Ontario Dairy and Savour Ontario has come together with local chefs to put these recipes together. Although we may not be dining out as much, trying these recipes at home has given us a sense of hope and excitement. We’ve created date-days of it and it’s certainly allowed us to stay creative during this time at home.
A big thank you to our local Dairy Farmers and the chefs who took the time to create these recipes. Until we meet together over good food at the same table again <3
